POSITION SUMMARY
Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to
machine metallic and nonmetallic parts. Sets up and operates variety of machine tools such as radial drill press, lathes,
milling machines, and grinders, to machine metal workpieces such as patterns and machine tools.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine
dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece.
Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides
for subsequent machining.
Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials
on machines such as mills, lathes, grinders, and drill saws.
Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow and
depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input or edit computerized machine control
media.
Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and
adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed
control data.
Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.
Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be
machined.
Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve discrepancies.
Lifts workpiece manually or using hoist, positions and secure it to holding device such as machine
table, chuck, centers, or fixture.
Selects feed rate, cutting speed, depth of cut, and cutting tool (bar tool, rotary cutter, or abrasive
steel) for each operation.
Starts machine to feed tool in workpiece or vice versa, and engages automatic feeding.
Devises ways of clamping workpieces and makes special jigs and fixtures as needed.
Must follow all safety rules and regulations, including the reporting of any hazards, violations, or
injuries to your Team Leader no matter how minor.
Must operate safety equipment and help provide a safe working environment by maintaining good
housekeeping practices.
Performs other routine duties.
Must be able to work overtime as required by the Team Leader.
Maintains a proactive relationship with both outside peers and department managers.
Adheres to regulatory, departmental, safety and company policies in an ethical manner.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in an organized fashion, along with being able to make confident
decisions.
Adjusts feed, speeds, tooling, coolant and lubricants as predetermined by specifications or special
instructions.
Must be able to adjust tool offset or WPC's as it becomes necessary.
Must demonstrate the ability to learn to operate CNC lathes and/or machining centers in work cells.
Must be able to learn to use the floor reporting system including correctly completing time card,
reporting their production, filling out move tags, assisting in recognizing and correcting any standard
or routing discrepancies.

Education
High school graduate or General Education Degree (GED); or six months to one year related experience and/or
training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. On the Job Training (OJT), if applicable, is to be
performed by a qualified operator and/or Team Leader.

Computer Skills
Basic computer skills.
Other Requirements
Mathematical Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,
common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent to draw and interpret bar graph.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations
where only limited standardization exits. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral,
diagram or schedule form.
